Hand your homepage to three strangers. Set a five-second timer. Ask them to tell you what your business does and who it’s for. If two of three can’t answer cleanly, your homepage is failing — and no amount of Google Ads, SEO, or LinkedIn campaigns will fix it. You’re pouring traffic into a leaky bucket. This is the single cheapest, most predictive B2B conversion test in existence, and almost nobody in Bergen County actually runs it.
Whether you work with us or not, do this test before you spend another dollar on traffic. It costs $0 and 15 minutes. It will save you thousands.
Why the Headline Is the Whole Game
Mobile B2B visitors give your homepage 1.8-3.2 seconds before they decide whether to scroll or bounce. The only thing they see in that window is your hero headline, maybe a subhead, and a hero image. If the headline doesn’t answer “what is this and is it for me,” they’re gone — and 87% of bounced visitors never return.
The headline isn’t your tagline. It isn’t your mission statement. It isn’t clever wordplay. It is the literal, boring, plainspoken answer to “what do you do.” A Bergen County industrial-equipment financing company we audited had the headline “Empowering Tomorrow’s Industrial Vision.” We changed it to “Equipment Financing for NJ Manufacturers — Approved in 48 Hours.” Conversion went from 0.9% to 3.4%. Same traffic. Same offer. Different sentence.
How to Run the 5-Second Test
The full version takes 30 minutes and costs nothing. The quick version takes 5 minutes and gets you 80% of the answer. Either works. Don’t skip it because you “already know what your site does.”
- Find three strangers. Not employees, not your spouse, not your accountant. Strangers. The coffee shop on Main Street in Hackensack is a goldmine. Offer a $10 gift card.
- Pull up your homepage on your phone. Mobile, not desktop. This is the format 78% of your real visitors see.
- Set a 5-second timer. Literally count it out. “Look at this for five seconds, then I’m taking it away.”
- Take the phone away. Ask two questions: “What does this company do?” and “Who do you think it’s for?”
- Write down their exact words. Not your interpretation. Their literal phrasing.
- Score it. Two of three answer correctly = pass. One of three = critical issue. Zero of three = you have no business buying traffic until this is fixed.
The Alternative Quick Test
No strangers available? Use UsabilityHub’s 5-Second Test for $20-40. You upload a screenshot, they show it to 5 panelists, you get transcripts. It’s not as good as live testing — panelists are more generous than real visitors — but it’s directionally honest and you can do it during your lunch break.
The third option: ChatGPT. Paste your homepage URL and ask, “In one sentence, what does this company do and who is it for? Be literal.” It won’t replace humans but it catches the most embarrassing mismatches in 30 seconds.
What a Passing Headline Looks Like
The formula is unglamorous: [What you do] for [who you serve], [proof or differentiator]. Examples that pass the 5-second test:
- “Fractional CFO Services for NJ Manufacturers — $3,500/month, No Long-Term Contract”
- “Commercial HVAC Maintenance for Bergen County Offices — 24-Hour Response Guaranteed”
- “IT Support for Law Firms in North Jersey — 12-Minute Average Ticket Response”
Boring. Specific. Testable. That’s the whole point.
How AJD Handles This
Every new AJD client engagement starts with a 5-second test on their existing homepage before we touch anything else. We run it with 5-7 strangers (we pay them $15 each, so about $90 total) and bring you the raw transcripts. If the test fails, that’s the first fix — before SEO, before ads, before any new content. It typically takes us 4-6 hours and $400-600 to rewrite a homepage hero based on what real strangers said, and the conversion lift usually pays for the entire engagement in the first 60 days.
If your homepage hasn’t been stranger-tested in the last 12 months, that’s the cheapest, highest-impact piece of work you can do. We’ll do it for you, or you can do it yourself with a $30 gift card budget.
Want us to run a 5-second test on your homepage and bring you the transcripts? Book a free discovery call and we’ll have results back to you in 5 business days at no charge.
