The Hidden Cost of a Slow Website: A Real Revenue Calculation

Page speed is one of those things people know matters but don't quantify. Here's the actual dollar math for a small B2B site.
Hidden Cost Slow Website Revenue Calculation

Page speed is one of those things every business owner nods at. Yes, it matters. Yes, we should fix it. Then nothing happens for two years.

The reason nothing happens is that nobody runs the actual math. So here it is, in dollars, for a small B2B site in Bergen County or anywhere else.

The headline number

Every additional second of page load time drops conversion by roughly 7 to 10 percent. That’s not a guess. Akamai, Google, Deloitte, and Cloudflare have all published studies inside that range over the last decade. The exact figure shifts by industry, but the direction never does.

A site that loads in 1.8 seconds converts dramatically better than the same site loading in 5.4 seconds. Same offer. Same copy. Same traffic. Just slower.

The math on a typical small B2B site

Let’s use a realistic Bergen County B2B example. 5,000 monthly visitors. 2 percent baseline conversion to a lead. Average customer worth $2,500 over the relationship.

At 1.8 second load: 5,000 visitors x 2% = 100 leads/month. At a 25% close rate, that’s 25 customers x $2,500 = $62,500/month.

Now slow the same site to 5.4 seconds. That’s 3.6 extra seconds. At 8% conversion loss per second, you’ve lost roughly 29% of conversions. 100 leads becomes 71. 25 closed deals becomes about 18. Monthly revenue drops from $62,500 to $44,375.

That’s $18,125 left on the table every month. $217,500 per year. From load time alone.

Where the slow time comes from

Slow pages are almost always the same five problems stacked on top of each other:

  • Hero images. Typically 40 to 60 percent of page weight. Usually uploaded straight from a phone or stock site at 3000+ pixels wide with no WebP conversion.
  • Third-party JavaScript. Chat widgets, analytics, ad pixels, retargeting tags. Each one adds 100 to 400ms. Most sites have 8 to 15 of them firing on every page.
  • Unoptimized fonts. Multiple Google Fonts families loading the full character set, blocking render until they arrive.
  • Render-blocking CSS. Stylesheets loaded in the head with no critical-CSS strategy.
  • No caching layer. Every visitor triggers a full database query instead of hitting a cached HTML file.

The compounding cost: lost rankings AND lost conversions

The conversion math above assumes the same traffic. But slow sites don’t keep the same traffic.

Core Web Vitals are an official Google ranking signal. Sites that fail LCP, INP, or CLS thresholds get pushed down in search results. You lose impressions before anyone even clicks. Then the slow load drops the conversion of the visitors who do click.

That’s the cascade. Lost rankings, then lost traffic, then lost conversions, then lost revenue. Each layer multiplies the one below it.

What the fixes actually cost

For a typical small B2B site, a real performance pass runs $300 to $2,000 in dev time. That covers image optimization, WebP conversion, font subsetting, deferred JavaScript, a caching layer, and Core Web Vitals work to clear the green thresholds.

Against the $18,000+/month example above, payback is measured in days. For smaller sites with lower deal size, payback is still 6 to 12 weeks. Almost every other marketing investment has a longer payback than fixing page speed.

How AJD handles this

Performance work lives inside our Technical Maintenance pillar. We measure Core Web Vitals on real traffic, not lab tests. We benchmark before, fix in priority order by impact, and re-measure after. Every site we maintain gets monitored monthly so a 1.8 second site doesn’t quietly become a 5.4 second site over the next year.

Whether you work with us or not, run the math on your own site. Pull your monthly traffic, your conversion rate, and your average customer value. Then check your load time on PageSpeed Insights. The number you find will probably surprise you, and not in a good way.

If you want a second set of eyes on what your slow load is costing you, we’ll run the numbers on a Free Discovery Call. No pitch deck, no pressure. Just the math on your site and the two or three fixes that would move the needle most.
